Scientists raise alarm as invasive malaria mosquito spreads across Africa

Scientists and public health experts are raising fresh concerns over the rapid spread of Anopheles stephensi, an invasive mosquito species capable of transmitting malaria across Africa.

Unlike most malaria-carrying mosquitoes that are commonly found in rural areas, Anopheles stephensi thrives in urban environments, breeding in artificial water containers around homes and cities.

Its ability to adapt to densely populated areas has heightened fears that it could fuel a resurgence of malaria in regions that have made significant progress in reducing the disease.

Health experts are particularly concerned because the mosquito has developed resistance to nearly all commonly used insecticides, making many traditional mosquito control methods far less effective.

The growing resistance has prompted scientists to intensify research into alternative strategies, including biological control methods, genetic technologies and the development of new insecticides to combat the invasive species.

Researchers say stronger international collaboration and coordinated public health efforts will be essential to contain the mosquito's spread and prevent a potential increase in malaria cases across the continent.
